Reading · 10 minutes
Read. Talk. Connect.
Read a picture book together. Choose three familiar words, say each slowly, and clap its syllables. Ask: Who is in the story? What happens first?
Use a book or text you already have. An adult can read aloud or take turns.
Writing · 10 minutes
Make your thinking visible.
Draw a picture of something you like. Say a sentence about it. With an adult, label one part using the sounds you hear.
Talk through the idea first. Drawing, dictating to an adult, or using sentence starters can help.
Math · 10 minutes
Solve it. Explain it.
Count 8 small objects, touching each once. Split them into two groups. How many are in each group? Try another split.
Parent guide: possible solution
Possible splits of 8: 1 and 7, 2 and 6, 3 and 5, or 4 and 4. Count the whole group again to check.

Reflect together.
Ask: What did you try? What helped? What would you do differently next time?
If frustration rises, pause or simplify the task. The goal is useful practice and connection.
For the grown-ups
Keep practice playful and brief. Read aloud even when your child is beginning to read independently.
Read an article. Identify the author’s claim and one piece of evidence. Explain whether that evidence supports the claim and what additional information would help.
Use a book or text you already have. An adult can read aloud or take turns.
Writing · 10 minutes

Write a claim about a school or community issue. Add a reason, an example, and a response to a different perspective.

A $48 item is discounted by 25%. What is the sale price before tax? Explain two ways to solve it.
